Clerk’s message January 2018

As I write we are already one third of the way through the Livery Year and once Christmas future has become Christmas past the ground rush of Livery events will be quite astonishing.

The next Livery dinner will be the Award to Industry Dinner on Wednesday 24th January 2018 at Vintners’ Hall. The book is now open and places can be booked via this link. Please book early to avoid disappointment and please note the book will close at 1700hrs on Wednesday 17th January 2018.

Then follows the Automotive Industry Dinner at Clothworkers’ Hall on Wednesday 7th March 2018. The book will open for this event the day after the Award to Industry Dinner on 25th January 2018; keep an eye out for the relevant e-mail.

And finally for this segment, no sooner will the Automotive Industry Dinner be digested but Coachmakers will be able to apply for a place at the Banquet. This year it will be held at the Guildhall on Friday 20th April 2018 in concert with the Air Pilots’ and Engineers’ Companies. More detail will be broadcast separately soon.

Website

Very shortly the Coachmakers’ website will be refreshed and updated. During this process you will not be able to update your personal details in the electronic Directory. However, once that is done I would encourage everyone to visit their personal entry and ensure that the details held are correct.

City

In wider City matters, many of you will recall that I regularly bang on about the City Briefings that are put on by the City of London Corporation. These early evening events (5.30pm-7.30pm) are aimed at introducing Liverymen and Freemen to the City of London Corporation and its links and inter-relationships with the Livery. Taking place at Guildhall, the forthcoming dates in 2018 are as follows:

  • Wednesday 7th February 2018
  • Monday 8th October 2018
  • Tuesday 20th November 2018

Comments from past attendees have highlighted how useful and informative they have found these sessions to be, as they provide an opportunity for you to ask questions of the City Corporation and the role of the Livery. It is an excellent opportunity to learn more about the City and thereby gain greater value from your membership of the Livery Community. To book on to these Briefing Courses please go to the website here or contact me for more details.

Additionally, the 36th Inter-Livery Bridge Competition, organised by the Makers of Playing Cards Company, will be held on 5th March 2018 at 5pm in Drapers’ Hall. The evening will include a supper interlude, trophies and prizes. To register, please contact their Clerk, David Barrett on clerk@makersofplayingcards.co.uk.

The 11th annual Lord Mayor’s Big Curry Lunch will be held on 11th April 2018 at Guildhall. The Lunch supports members of Her Majesty’s Armed Forces and veterans who have served in Iraq and Afghanistan and, since 2008, has contributed more than £1.7m to The Soldiers’ Charity. Proceeds will also be donated to the Royal Navy and Royal Marines’ Charity and The Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund, ensuring that all the Armed Forces are represented. For tickets and more information, please visit the website at https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/the-lord-mayors-big-curry-lunch-2018-tickets-37876251889. And for those who live in the northern wastelands, a reminder that the 2018 Brigantes’ Breakfast will be held at The Royal Armouries in Leeds on 25th May. For more information, please email livery@brigantes.org.uk.

And finally…

In conclusion, 2017 has been very busy and 2018 is likely to be the same. The Assistant Clerk and I look forward to seeing you at as many events as possible through the year and we hope that as you read this you will be reflecting on a happy Christmas past and a peaceful new year to come
